Scarlet Macaws
Scarlet Macaws
A pair of macaws away in a tree. Took the pic through a telescope so it is a bit fuzzy, but you can see the color.

We flew a very small plane from San Jose to Quepos on the Pacific Coast where the beaches and the banana farms, now jungles, are.

Hotel Balcony View
Hotel Balcony View
We stayed at the Si Como No hotel near Quepos. It has its own nature preserve with butterflys, tree frogs and crocodiles. The next few pics are a night tour.
Pygmy Frog
Pygmy Frog
This and the next pic are the same little frog. Focus is not good, but these leaves are a couple of inches wide so you can see how small it is.

Bull Frog
Bull Frog
Note the superb camouflage. This is the one that says knee deep or ribbit, depending on what your Grandma taught you.
Snake
Snake
You have to look close, but you should be able to pick out the long lizard eating yellow snake.
Snake
Snake
This is another view of the long skinny snake showing how he can climb one plant to reach a lizard on another one. A bored tourist is looking on .
Banana Spider
Banana Spider
This is a small version of the banana spider. Later we'll see one of these guys in the jaws of a lizard.
Lizard playing possum
Lizard playing possum
This is the prey of the aforeseen snake and the predator of spiders and other smaller creatures.
Red Eyed Frog
Red Eyed Frog
Focus is bad because the frog blends in so completely with his surroundings.
Red Eyed Tree Frog
Red Eyed Tree Frog
They seem to be quite friendly, but don't lick your fingers after you do this.
Bull Frog
Bull Frog
Can you find him?
Bull Frog
Bull Frog
He hopped away from the path, but we found him and took a closeup.
Carara National Park
Carara National Park
This is about an hour north of Quepos across three "Oh My God" bridges (one way and very rickety and you wait until all the cars coming the other way have passed.) Buy a ticket and trek down the path.

Bird with tail
Bird with tail
This was just inside the entrance of the park that the guide spotted this one. Note the tail.
Same bird
Same bird
I can't recall the name of it.
Leaf cutting ants
Leaf cutting ants
This pile is the output of ant spit and leafs that the leaf cutters produce. You might be able to see a few ants in the hole above.
Better view of leaf cutters
Better view of leaf cutters
You can see a couple of ants here pushing the compost down the hill.
Home of the leaf cutters
Home of the leaf cutters
I think the white fungus are the real reason that the ants do all this work
Fruit??
Fruit??
I'm not sure what this is, but hadn't seen anything like it growing before.

Jungle path. Note the large "struts" that seem to hold up the tree.

There's a stream on the right.
